Geography

Geography is taught as a discrete subject from S1 upwards. It is a popular and successful subject which aims to investigate links between people and their changing environment both in a local and in an international context.

The Geography curriculum is varied and stimulating at all levels. Students in S1 and S2 follow a broad course which gives them a good understanding of the world around them through activities which encourage the use of thinking skills and the four capacities of the Curriculum for Excellence.

Students wishing to study Geography in S3 and S4 may progress to National 5 exams at the end of S4. This course will focus on the development of geographic skills and techniques in both physical and human environments.

In S5 and S6 students have the opportunity to study Higher Geography. Through this course and the acquisition of techniques of geographical analysis, students develop an understanding of aspects of the contemporary world of concern to all citizens.

The Advanced Higher course allows students to complete a Geographical Study of their own choice and an independently researched Geographical Issues essay.

Throughout all levels of Geography there is a strong use of audio visual and IT resources. Fieldwork also plays an important role with a variety of trips at all levels.
