Independent Nursery, Junior and Senior School, Edinburgh

Sport

At Clifton Hall we provide a variety of sporting opportunities which enable pupils to develop their individual skills but which also develop team skills. Inter-school fixtures are arranged in team sports such as rugby, hockey, netball, football and cricket. Individual pursuits also feature in sports such as cross-country running, swimming and judo.

We attempt to instil a positive and competitive spirit in our pupils, which is underpinned by good sportsmanship and courtesy to our opponents. We cannot stress enough the importance we place on a healthy and active lifestyle for all of our pupils. Regardless of individual ability, pupils are encouraged and supported to take a full and active part in all sporting pursuits and to have fun whilst doing so.

Physical Education

Our aim with the PE Department is to develop individuals who enjoy a variety of physical activities in order to develop a continued interest throughout their adult lives.

A physical education doesn’t just mean participating in physical activity, but studying all aspects of health and well being. During pupils’ time at Clifton Hall they will learn about healthy eating, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and the benefits of an interest in physical activity.
In order to make these choices pupils at Clifton Hall are encouraged to try, participate and enjoy a wide variety of activities in order to awaken interest and encourage sportsmanship, to promote fair-play and to develop a healthy interest in participation and competition through activity.

Clifton Hall School is lucky to boast exceptional grounds, a great swimming pool, Sports Hall and pavilion, providing ample opportunity for a wide range of activities during class time, lunch time, break time, after school and Saturday mornings.

The Curriculum

In the primary school and lower senior school the curriculum offers swimming to all ages, covering front crawl, back crawl, breastroke and butterfly. We also look at lifesaving skills and cover swimming badges. The year culminates in school galas where pupils try to enter the school record books.
In PE we cover gymnastics and Scottish dancing ( in preparation for school Christmas dances). We also look at racket sports and team games such as basketball and uni-hockey. During the summer term the focus turns to athletics in preparation for school sports days. Here again pupils work their hardest to set new school records. Cricket skills and short tennis are also covered with the younger pupils.
Every pupils at Clifton Hall gets the opportunity to participate in a sports day and a swimming gala at the end of the school year. The term then finishes with prize- giving, where an array of sports prizes are awarded.
