Congratulations to Emma (S5) on coming runner up in the Grand Final of the St Andrew’s Day Debating Tournament.
The competition, held annually at The Scottish Parliament for the past ten years, pairs school pupils and university students to compete in a three-round tournament, culminating in a Grand Final in the main Debating Chamber. Emma teamed up with Henry, a student from the University of Edinburgh – and together they successfully progressed through the three rounds to reach the final four.
The final debate was about whether the Scottish Government should introduce a universal basic income. Emma and Henry were drawn in opposition, and Emma made a very compelling case, highlighting the importance of work to the human condition.
Following the judges deliberation, the pair were awarded second place, and presented the runners-up prize.
The Grand Final was filmed by the Scottish Parliament and is available to watch by following this link:
Congratulations also to Sophie (S4), Lucy (S2) and Cameron (S4), who all judged three debates throughout the day, and made some excellent contributions to the floor debate during the final.
