The creation of a vibrant learning environment and a happy and positive ethos allows children to display their individual qualities to be nurtured and enhanced through staff observations, support and teaching.
The Nursery provides quality education and care for 40 children aged between 3 and 5 years of age. Set within its own extensive outdoor area and Clifton Hall’s unique grounds, it provides the children with daily opportunities to explore the natural world and experience seasonal changes.
Children are required to attend a minimum of 5 sessions per week, 8.15am to 12 noon, with the option of adding a school-cooked two course lunch between 12 noon and 1.00pm. Afternoon care in the Nursery extends to 3.00pm and thereafter children can be catered for in the school’s After School Club until 5.30pm.
During a typical week, each Nursery child will participate in key worker-led activities, music, dance and PE sessions (led by the school’s PE department). In addition, pre-school children will participate in French, pre-school teacher led activities in language and mathematics and have the option to swim during an afternoon session. The Nursery children fully participate in planning their half-termly topics, which encourages them to become effective contributors, responsible citizens, confident individuals and successful learners.
The Nursery is in partnership with Edinburgh City Council. This qualifies all children (in the term following their 3rd birthday) for pre-school partnership funding.
‘A Curriculum for Excellence’ Early Level
In Nursery each child has a pupil profile which is completed throughout their time in Nursery by staff and parents-children have such a rich variety of experiences in the home it is important that they are recognised and valued in a child’s development.
The following ‘Profile example for Nursery Parents was completed with examples of home experiences linked to the Early Level of ‘A Curriculum for Excellence’ by Clifton Hall Nursery Parents and staff (during a parents’ discussion evening).
