Job Description: Part-time Physical Education Teacher (Scotland)

Specialisms: Netball, Basketball, Swimming (desirable)
Hours: Part-time (0.5 FTE, days to be confirmed)

Reporting to: Curriculum Leader/ Depute Headteacher Senior School

 

 

  1. Role Purpose

The Part-time PE Teacher will deliver high-quality Physical Education in line with GTCS Professional Standards, including the Standard for Full Registration and national expectations for teacher professionalism. These standards highlight professional values such as social justice, trust, respect and integrity, and underpin careerlong professional learning and reflective practice.

The post-holder will contribute to the planning and delivery of core PE and a broad co‑curricular sports programme with a particular focus on netball, basketball and swimming.

  1. Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Plan, prepare and deliver engaging PE lessons aligned with Curriculum for Excellence and school policies for Junior School and Senior School pupils.
  • Assess, record and report on pupil progress using appropriate assessment strategies.
  • Maintain positive discipline, ensure pupil safety and support wellbeing.
  • Support pupils’ cognitive, social and emotional development, reflecting the GTCS Professional Standards.

 

Practical Sports Delivery (Specialist Areas)

  • Lead high-quality coaching sessions in netball, basketball and swimming, including skill development, tactical understanding and match preparation.
  • Coach school teams during lunch, after‑school sessions and occasional weekend fixtures, ensuring high standards of conduct on and off the field.
  • Support the organisation of fixtures, tournaments, team selection and transport logistics.

 

Pastoral Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with pupils, consistent with GTCS values.
  • Provide pastoral support where required, modelling respectful, supportive and inclusive professional behaviour.

 

Professionalism & Collegiate Working

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents/carers and wider partners to support learning and achievement.
  • Engage actively in professional learning, reflective practice and GTCS Professional Update processes.
  • Contribute to departmental development, curriculum planning and improvement processes.

 

Cocurricular & Wider School Contribution

  • Make a meaningful contribution to the school’s sports programme, including training sessions, clubs and inter‑school events.
  • Help promote a positive school ethos through participation in events, supporting trips and assisting with school community activities.

 

Required Qualifications & Registration

  • Full GTCS Registration in Secondary Physical Education is essential.
  • Membership of the PVG Scheme for work with children is required.
  • Current National Pool Life-guard Qualification (NPLQ).

 

Skills, Knowledge & Attributes

  • Strong practical expertise in curricular sport with the ability to lead coaching sessions confidently.
  • Ability to plan and deliver high-quality PE lessons that meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Strong communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
  • A reflective, self-evaluative approach to teaching, aligned with GTCS expectations.
  • Commitment to promoting equality, inclusion and positive relationships.

 

 Desirable Experience

  • Experience coaching school teams or leading extra‑curricular sports teams.
  • Experience organising fixtures, tournaments or multi‑sport programmes.
  • Familiarity with national qualifications in PE (BGE, National 5, Higher, Advanced Higher).

 HOLIDAYS

Teachers are entitled to normal school holidays. Currently the school operates for 177 full days and up to four in service days per annum.
